STEAM R&E Achievement Conference for Teachers and Students

On November 18 (Sat.), the 2017 STEAM Research and Education (R&E) Achievement Conference, hosted by the Ministry of Education (Minister Kim Sang-kon) and organized by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity (KOFAC, President Tai Hyun Park), was successfully held at Ewha Womans University’s Ewha Campus Complex (ECC).

More than 600 people, including teachers and students interested in STEAM* as well as experts from diverse fields, attended and participated in the event. * STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics): an approach to learning that aims to foster stu dents’ interest in and understanding of science and technology and also seeks to cultivate literacy and problem-solving skills in STEAM areas.

The conference consisted of an assessment of the STEAM R&E presentations, screening of user-created content videos made by research teams, special lectures by former STEAM R&E students, and exchanges of various types of information. This year’s conference was particularly significant due to the participation of 130 STEAM R&E student research teams, which shared the research achievements they had made over the past year and engaged in competitions against each other.

A KOFAC official remarked, “We were surprised to see the many creative ways that students had come up with to solve various problems in people’s everyday lives. The conference also made us realize once again the importance of creating opportunities for more students to develop their capacity for self-directed research in order to foster creative, interdisciplinary professionals.”
