Getting Artistic Contents with Science (GAS) 2017 Exhibition

Enters Its Third Run

The third run of the “Getting Artistic Contents with Science 2017” (GAS 2017) exhibition, hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT, Minister You Young Min) and organized by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity (KOFAC, President Tai Hyun Park), was held from November 16 (Thurs.) to 26 (Sun.) at the community art center Platform L in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.

The GAS is an exhibition that was first held in 2016 by KOFAC with the aim of making science more accessible to the general public through art and vitalizing artistic content by discovering artistic fields that can be combined with science. A total of 22 artists participated in this year’s exhibition, titled “GAS 2017: A.I. and Artificial Intelligence,” in nine teams, each of which featured an artwork under the theme of artificial intelligence.  Unlike the previous runs of the exhibition, this one opened with a ceremony, which was attended by experts in science and technology as well as education.

A representative from each of the nine teams of artists also attended the event to provide in-depth explanations of their artworks, which included: “Deep Loving,” an artwork that portrayed a way of communicating with artificial intelligence; “Project Alter I: An Accidental Encounter,” a media performance that depicted an encounter between artificial intelligence and humans; and “AI, Brain Wave & Ideal City,” an installation artwork that incorporated brain waves to focus attention on the duality of technologies. President Tai Hyun Park of KOFAC expressed his hope that the Getting Artistic Contents with Science exhibition would provide people with greater access to and a deeper understanding of science. He was also hopeful about the continued convergence of science and other fields.
